Lesson 291: Be Patient

Dear sir, Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now see the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer. Perhaps you do carry within yourself the possibility of shaping and forming as a particularly happy and pure way of living; train yourself to it — but take whatever comes with great trust, and if only it comes out of your own will, out of your inmost being, take it upon yourself and hate nothing. . .
— Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet. Translation by M.D. Herter Norton. New York: WW. Norton & Company, Inc., 1954

Today we are to contemplate the words of poet Rainer Maria Rilke. It serves as a reminder to relax on what you need to know.

I definitely have accepted that I do not need to have the answers to everything. I think I used to be quite impatient and would like to know the answers to everything, but I like to live with a bit of mystery in life. I don’t need to control every situation which I believe is part of impatience. If you let things be, they will work out the way it’s supposed to. You continue living without having the answers to everything. You can still make decisions and life continues on. It’s about acceptance that sometimes things are outside of your control whilst others aren’t. You don’t stop living just because you don’t have an answer to your life. Sometimes it’s all about trust and letting go to let the Universe unfold it for you. We just need a reminder from time to time.
